Workplace rehabilitation referrals for insurers

HEALTH ABILITY is a SIRA-accredited NSW Workplace Rehabilitation Provider (#752). Our Sydney-based consultants help workers, employers, treating teams and insurers plan practical recovery at work.

When to refer

Consider a workplace rehabilitation referral when recovery at work is not progressing as expected, suitable duties are unclear, the injury or work circumstances are complex, or communication and other barriers need coordinated support. SIRA says the insurer discusses the need for referral and choice of provider with the worker and relevant support team before engaging an approved provider. See SIRA referral guidance.

How HEALTH ABILITY can help

Depending on the agreed referral, support can include reviewing work demands and capacity information, identifying suitable duties and adjustments, developing a recovery-at-work plan with the relevant parties, coordinating communication, and monitoring progress. Related services include functional capacity assessments, job demand analysis, suitable duties registers and work conditioning. We confirm the scope and any required approval before services begin.

A clear referral pathway

  1. Discuss the need and provider choice. Consult the worker and employer, and involve the treating doctor where appropriate.
  2. Submit the online referral. Describe the work location, referral question, requested service and case manager contact details through the form.
  3. Agree the scope. We clarify the work question, available information, service area, approvals and reporting expectations.
  4. Coordinate the plan. Once engaged, we work with the worker and relevant parties, report against agreed goals and raise material changes.

Questions insurers ask

Who engages and pays the rehabilitation provider?

In the NSW workers compensation scheme, the insurer engages the approved provider and pays for agreed services. The worker must be consulted about provider choice.

Can a worker request HEALTH ABILITY?

Yes. A worker can ask the insurer to consider HEALTH ABILITY. The insurer discusses the request and arranges any agreed engagement. See the worker guide.

Does a rehabilitation report replace medical certification?

No. The treating practitioner provides medical advice and certificates of capacity. Rehabilitation reporting addresses the agreed work and recovery questions.

Where does HEALTH ABILITY work?

Our team is based in Sydney and primarily supports Sydney metro and surrounding regions. We confirm location and availability for each referral.
